Top 10 Tips for Taking Recruitment Tests

Searching for a new job is almost a full-time job itself. It’s packed full of stresses like making sure your CV is in the best shape, putting across the best impression possible to your recruiter and the hiring manager. Then you’re asked to sit through some recruitment assessments. Aaargh – as if you haven’t got enough to contend with!

 

 

Ok relax. Take a breath. If your recruiter is asking you to take some skills tests or behaviour assessments, they aren’t out to get you. It means they are taking your job search seriously. They are building up the best picture of you that they possibly can so they can put you forward for roles where you will flourish.

 

 

Only by knowing your true capabilities, transferable skills and work preferences can the recruiter find you the most appropriate job. So don’t stress. If tests make you anxious or you’re not sure what to expect, read these top 10 tips which will give you the best chance of performing to the best of your ability.

  1. Allow plenty of time for your test/s, if you are heading into a branch or office – allow plenty of travelling time. Your recruiter should be able to advise how long the exercises will take.

 

  1. Take a few slow, deep breaths if you feel anxious. Use these techniques to remain calm and relaxed so you are clear headed and can focus.

 

  1. Read the introductory instructions at the beginning of the test thoroughly, they will give you a steer on what’s expected and how to answer the questions. There may even be practice questions you can try.

 

  1. Ensure you are in a quiet place, free from distractions before you commence any assessments.

 

  1. Read each question carefully before answering.

 

  1. Assessments are usually timed. Keep an eye on the counter and do not dwell on one question for too long. If you can’t complete it, skip on to the next one, you can usually go back if you have time.

 

  1. Keep in mind that the assessments aren’t out to get you, they are just a snapshot of your skill level.

 

  1. Check what software or device you can do your tests on. Some might not be compatible with mobile devices or they might need a plugin downloaded.

 

  1. If you want to brush up on core literacy and numeracy skills, try out some word or number based puzzles.

 

  1. If you are going for a particular job like accountancy or a clerical role, remind yourself of the software that might be used. For example; Sage or Microsoft Word.

 

Whether you are taking your assessments at home or in the office with your recruiter, keep in mind these points and you’ll be fine. Remember, a recruitment company will use the tests along with your CV, your experience and what they know about you in order to paint the best picture of you.
